The Importance of Quarantine

Did you know that the first quarantine was introduced in 1377 in Dubrovnik on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast? That’s crazy how long ago quarantine was still around. Click ‘Read More’ to know more about quarantine in 2020 and why it is a good idea for us all during this time.

The virus started in Wuhan, China and was able to spread by coughing, sneezing, or by human contact. The first person in the United States to be affected by this virus was a Washington state resident who came back from Wuhan, China. With the virus going around the U.S. California was the first state to call a stay at home order, mandating all residents to stay at home and only going out for essential needs such as food, water, and any other health medications that you may need. With that happening, the whole United States went into quarantine shortly afterwards. “I think that quarantining was a great idea to stop the spread.” said Daniel Guerrero-Hernandez Sophomore at Washington High School.  “It was just hard to live because my mother and father couldn’t work so then it was harder to get money.”

As you know, masks are now required everywhere you go to prevent any more cases of COVID. Staying 6 feet apart is also part of the rule that we have to follow if we ever decided to go outside with a lot of people. Now, not all citizens have been following these rules and they caused more cases of COVID to rise rapidly. “We stayed quarantined for like a month and people just go out anyways and we keep spreading it and it feels like we're not doing anything.” Daniel said. US citizens need to make sure to stay inside with the exception of essential needs. If you do need to go out of your house, please bring your masks and some hand sanitizer with you and stay 6 feet away from people as much as you can to prevent getting COVID.

There are cons to staying inside the house. You are limited from doing things that you love to do outside. “We used to go to a bowling alley and it was so much fun but then when Covid happened we couldn’t go.” Daniel said. You can’t just stay home and do nothing all day and wait for all of this to end. There are also things that you can do inside the house. “I got the opportunity to workout more and watch a lot of movies,” Daniel said.  The sooner we start following the rules, staying home, wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and staying 6 feet away from people, the faster the cases would go down. With the cases going down, the virus will most likely stop spreading and before you know it, we may be able to finally go back outside like coronavirus never existed.

Quarantine is really important for everyone to follow. Not only does it help make the cases go down, it’s also for you and your family to stay safe and to avoid getting the virus. How do you feel staying quarantined? Comment below and share your thoughts.
